Dubai Int'l passenger traffic up 7.7% in January

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Dubai International began new year on high note as the airport handled record 6.9 million passengers in January, reflecting an increase of 7.7 per cent due to holiday traffic and the annual Dubai Shopping Festival.

Dubai Airports, which released the latest data on Monday, said Eastern European routes saw the fastest expansion of traffic followed by North America, the Indian Subcontinent and Asia. Russia and the CIS recorded fewer visitors with traffic, down 22.7 per cent.

The airport recorded 34,643 aircraft movements in January 2015, up 6.2 per cent compared to the 32,625 movements recorded in January 2014.

"Considering that Dubai International is projected to welcome over 79 million passengers in 2015, there is no better way to begin a year than with a record month," said Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports.

Freight volumes, however, contracted 5.5 per cent to 186,230 tonnes.
