(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An Arab man who murdered his wife and aborted her unborn baby - claiming that the baby was not his - has been sentenced to death for premeditated murder. He was also ordered to pay Dh10,000 as blood money for aborting the child.
The Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation quashed the verdict of the emirate's court of appeal, which had sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
The apex court said in its ruling that the defendant's confession to killing his wife before a judge in an inheritance case and the public prosecution is considered as a confession that calls for retribution.
According to court documents, the defendant suspected that the child his wife was pregnant with was not his, which led to a dispute between the couple. The wife refused to abort child, which escalated the dispute.
The deceased's brother called from abroad to settle the dispute, but to no avail. The very next day, the defendant stabbed his wife in the chest, neck and abdomen, which led to her death and the abortion of the unborn child.
The court was told that the defendant stole the mobile phone of his brother-in-law, took his murdered wife's car and left for the airport. He abandoned the car in the Bani Yas area, took a taxi to the airport and fled to Bahrain.
The victim's brother notified the police of the murder, after which the defendant was arrested from Bahrain Intentional Airport.
He confessed to the murder in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi and led the police to the abandoned car.
The defendant maintained a plea of innocence through all phases of litigation and court proceedings.
