(MENAFNEditorial)

As long as there has been a need to study there has been a need for supplementary tutoring. In recent years tutoring has been taken to new heights due to online tutoring services. To help students search through the overwhelming amounts of tutoring services we’ve decided to compare the top 5 online tutoring companies.

1. Smarthinking

Starthinking provides several resources for students including personalized tutoring and essay reviews. They service nearly every subject a college student could find themselves in and then some! The platform was designed and is currently operated entirely by academics each with Master’s or Ph.D.’s.

The downside to this is the unbelievable expense of the tutoring service. It hourly fees even surpass that of in-person tutoring services. Additionally the nature of the tenured academics that run their tutoring service will be the same as your professors and if you are seeking tutoring services because you can’t understand them chances are you may not understand the tutors doing the same. Sometimes you need someone more sympathetic to your situation for tutoring.

Summary – Merits: A lot of resources educated staff; Demerits: Extremely expensive unsympathetic staff

4: InstaEDU (3 Stars)

InstaEDU offers a very interesting online tutoring service. The platform seems like a virtual classroom with a “whiteboard” for you and your tutor to use. They provide help for several different subjects mostly your general college courses.

Some of their drawbacks are the lack of specialty classes and the recurring billing. Most students need tutoring services in the more specialized and higher level classes which this platform falls short on. Also the recurring billing keeps charging students until they cancel and does not provide a subscription-free service.

Summary – Merits: Interactive Platform; Demerits: Lacks high-level tutors

3. Pearson TutorServices (4 Stars)

Pearson one of the major textbook publishers in the world offers tutor services for students that extends as far as their textbook offerings do. They supply nearly every subject and level but only as far as reviewing papers and math sessions. Another benefit to Pearson TutorServices is that you don’t have to subscribe to it. You just purchase for the review of a paper or for a certain amount of math tutoring.

The downside to this service is the lack of depth and personalization. The paper review is pretty much just that a review. They are returned to you with suggestions but do not necessarily help you when you need it. Additionally despite the lack of subscription they do have some of the highest prices for such little tutoring service.

Summary – Merits: No subscription huge resource pool; Demerits: Expensive and lacks depth

2. Chegg – InstaEduOnline (4 Stars)

Chegg is an online tutoring service providing great tutoring services. The main benefit with this company is their vast store of subjects and topics that they handle. They provide study guides tutoring and several other services. They’ll even buy books off of you once you’ve finished.

Their main drawback seems to be their customer service and automated billing. They have a number of complaints from people getting billed once they stopped using it. There are also some complaints about unfair book pricing once they receive it. Read here.

Summary – Merits: Many resources; Demerits: Money hungry company

1. Paperbid (5 Stars)

Paperbid is an interesting platform for people to get tutoring services. What the company does is it connects students and tutors together in an eBay-like way. Students post a question with a budget tutors bid on it. Unlike these other tutoring services you only pay for the each individual tutoring service you select without the hassle of automatic billing.

One of the best things about Paperbid is that so many people use it that the resources are seemingly endless. The free sample of the tutors work and the unique Paperbid tutor “grading system” gives students insight into their tutor’s ability before they decide to use them or not.
