Germany stresses commitment to supporting Jordan


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Germany, on Wednesday, reiterated its commitment to supporting Jordan, which is experiencing major unprecedented hardships, the German embassy in Amman said in a statement.

Germany will continue to offer support to Jordan help it grapple with major burdens incurred because of a massive influx of Syrian refugees who sought safe haven in the Kingdom, according to the embassy's statement.

The Dutch government increased its humanitarian and developmental assistance to Jordan to ease some of these burdens and also increased allocations for the water sector in the Kingdom.

Jordan's Minister of Planning, Ibrahim Saif, and German Ambassador to Jordan, Ralph Tarraf, today, inked technical cooperation agreements worth ‚¬193 million.

Large proportions of the German financial assistance will be allocated for northern governorates, which were hit hard by the refugee crisis.

Furthermore, another major proportion of the German assistance will be assigned to finance a large water pipeline which will provide water for nearly two million people, the embassy noted.

It added that the agreements will help build a plant to generate hydroelectric power at the King Talal Dam, as well as continue support to the Yarmouk Water Company in Irbid.

The embassy pointed out that the total value of the German aid, amounting to ‚¬193 million, has a direct grant component worth ‚¬38 million and preferential loans worth ‚¬155 million.

On behalf of the German government, Tarraf thanked Jordanian partners, especially the Jordanian government, for their cooperation and mutual trust that characterize bilateral relations.

He said that Germany appreciates the Jordanian people's efforts and will continue to support Jordan.
