Greece suspends football league over violence

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Greece's new leftist-government on Wednesday suspended the country's top football league indefinitely over violence, saying games at all 18 clubs will resume only when security cameras and smart-card ticketing are in place, dpa reported.
Local media reported the decision was made after a meeting between Stavros Kontonis, the deputy minister for sport, and the heads of the Super League, Football League and Hellenic Football Federation in Athens.
Kontonis was expected to inform Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of the decision later on Wednesday.
The step was taken following a weekend of violence at a league match between rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, which caused injury to several players and coaches.
Tension continued this week when a fight broke out between officials of the clubs at a board meeting of league organizers.
