Israel arrests 11 Hamas members on charges of planning attacks

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Eleven members of the Islamist Hamas movement have been arrested in the West Bank for planning attacks against Israelis, the Israeli internal security organization Shin Bet reported Monday. The report was monitored in Riyadh.
They were apprehended by Israeli soldiers in the southern city of Hebron in January, according to a statement.
Several weapons and explosive devices were found during the operation, it said.
The planned attacks included a suicide bombing, Shin Bet reported.
The arrested also admitted to their Shin Bet interrogators that they had tried to carry out an attack against an Israeli army checkpoint in Hebron.
The plan was to create a distraction with a first explosive device, attract a large number of soldiers, and then blow up a more powerful bomb, it said.
The device did not go off because of a technical failure.
'The activities of this cell reflect the real threat posed by Hamas in Hebron, and particularly by members of its armed wing who were arrested in the past and return to terrorism,' said the statement.
