Qatar- World No.1 a distant dream for Kvitova

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic believes taking the slow and steady route will help her reach the WTA rankings summit.

"Well I did say I would like to be number one in the world one day, but I didn't say it's going to be this year. For sure, it is still a lot of work. I'm not really thinking about it now. I'm just trying to improve my game," the 24-year-old, the top seed at the Qatar Total Open said here yesterday.

Kvitova, who first won the Wimbledon title in 2011 and followed it up with another victory in 2014, said she wants to add more Grand Slam titles to her resume.

"Of course, another Grand Slam would be great to win. I don't mind if it's Wimbledon again. It's a great event and I always love to be there. So we'll see. Of course it took me three years to win another Grand Slam after 2011. So I know how tough it is to win again.

"But of course from the last year and the year before, I would like to improve my results in the Grand Slams," she said.

The Czech has no plans to change her schedule in pursuit of yet another title at this year's Wimbledon.

"I think the schedule is pretty similar to the years before. I don't think I will do anything big to my schedule to play well in the Grand Slams, but I always wanted to play great at the big events. And so, we will see how it goes. Health is important and, hopefully, everything will be fine.

"As a tennis player, I wanted always do the best and try to be deeper, especially in the Grand Slam. I'm happy to have a title from this year in Sydney for sure. Of course, I expect a little bit more for myself in Melbourne. That hurt me, but then its tennis and it's always like that and I'm going to try to be better again and play better tennis," she added.

Kvitova said she is aiming to improve her game not only for grass courts but also for clay.

"I'm trying to improve on every surface, not only the hard courts. I mean, I had pretty great events already playing on the hard courts this year when I won at Sydney. It's still a lot of work to do, of course. The clay is coming soon, in two months.

"I think it's nice to change the surface. I have quite a good game for the hard courts"I'm not saying too much in the clay because it's a little bit different. It always takes me some time. But the hard courts, yeah, I do like them. I grew up on the hard courts during the winter so I'm used to them," she said.

Kvitova, who lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the Dubai Open pre-quarter-finals, was disappointed with last week's performance and wants to better in Qatar.

"Of course, Dubai was tough last week, didn't really play my best tennis. I will try to play better this week here (Doha)," said Kvitova, who has won 15 career titles and has earned a first round bye in Doha.

Kvitova has been handed a first round bye and will in all likelihood take on Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the first round, if she gets through.

"I know I can possibly play Jelena on the qualifier. Funny thing is that I lost to her in the qualifier last year here. So it's quite tough for the first round if she wins," she said.
