Qatar- Oscar 2015 nominee Timbuktu to be shown at Qumra next month


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Oscar 2015 nominee Timbuktu by Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako will be screened at the inaugural Qumra to be held from March 6 to 11 at Katara, Doha Film Institute (DFI) said yesterday.

Timbuktu, which won seven Cesar Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, in France during the weekend, is one of the featured films in public screening programme for Qumra Masters, a group of actors and directors.

Screenings also include Pablo Larrain's No, starring Qumra Master Gael García Bernal; Tales From the Golden Age, a compendium of five short films written and produced by Romanian New Wave master Cristian Mungiu and directed by him and four others; Dariush Mehrju'i's Leila featuring a breakthrough performance by Qumra Master Leila Hatami; and An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker by Danis Tanovi, winner of the Jury Grand Prix and the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.

Each screening will be accompanied by a question-and-answer session with the filmmaker or Qumra Master presenting the film.

Screenings will also feature new voices, selected from films supported by DFI's grants and co-financing programmes.

The new voices strand will present two narrative feature films, one documentary feature film and a programme of short films supported by DFI's funding programmes. They are: Memories on Stone by Shawkat Amin Korki; My Love Awaits me by the Sea by Mais Darwazah; The Narrow Frame of Midnight by Tala Hadid; and short films The Forgotten by Ehab Tarabieh, Maqloubeh by Nicolas Damuni, Old Airport Road by Abdullah Al Mulla, Survival Visa by Nadia Rais and The Wall by Odette Makhlouf Mouarkech.

Fatma Al Remaihi, CEO, DFI, said: "We are excited to share this outstanding collection of films during Qumra. The collection of films by Qumra Masters alongside compelling new voices in cinema will provide Doha audiences with a window into some of the most creative, innovative and inspired films in recent years."

Screenings are the public component of the event which also includes an intensive industry programme for directors and producers behind 30 film projects at various stages of development.

Qumra Projects participants will be connected with industry mentors to assist them in advancing their work to the next stage and will attend classes presented by Qumra Masters.

About 100 delegates from the film and media industry in Qatar will also participate in selected components of the industry programme.

Tickets are on sale online from today at 10am and from tomorrow at 2pm at DFI Katara Drama Theatre Ticket Outlet.
