EHC, CESI to make 'automated meter reading' a reality in Oman


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) CESI Middle East a subsidiary of technical consulting and engineering company CESI has signed an agreement with Oman's Electricity Holding Co SAOC (EHC now known as Nama Group) - on behalf of the distribution and supply companies in the sultanate - to introduce 'automated meter reading' technology (AMR also called smart-metering) for high-value customers. 

The agreement with CESI was signed in the presence of senior executives from EHC's subsidiaries including Muscat Electricity Distribution Co SAOC Mazoon Electricity Co SAOC Majan Electricity Co SAOC and Rural Areas Electricity Co SAOC and Dhofar Power Co.

According to the agreement CESI will help EHC and its subsidiaries develop the blueprint for AMR implementation in Oman. CESI will be responsible for defining the customer segments and functional requirements of AMR. In addition CESI will plan the rollout approach outlining security measures and standards designing the market messaging system detailing the solution architecture and system-level designs to be employed in the AMR system identifying meter specifications telecommunications media and IT solutions and meter data management system (MDMS) and charting out the testing strategy governance practices risk evaluation and mitigation practices a press release said on Sunday.

Matteo Codazzi chief executive officer of CESI said 'The Middle East's growing demand for energy calls for a focus on technologies that promote efficiency and ensure the conservation and long-term sustainability of natural resources. This agreement is a fine example of how private and public sectors can collaborate to identify the best technologies to improve productivity and unlock the maximum potential in any given asset ultimately benefitting citizens smaller enterprises and government functions.'

The agreement will support the government's privatisation policies for the sector and enable the application of more sophisticated services for high-value customers which include large industrial and commercial and government customers. The smart-metering technology will enhance the quality and speed of processing of metering data improve billing accuracy reduce debtor days mitigate losses and lessen query related costs.

Eng Omar al Wahaibi CEO of Nama Group said 'This project will drive the electricity sector to a superior level of customer service. This implementation of AMR enables both customers and power companies to better understand consumption.
