GCC chief denies reports on Egypt ties

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) GCC Secretary-General Dr. Abdulateef Al Zayani has denied statements attributed to him about Gulf-Egypt relations.

Al Zayani stressed that the GCC countries had always sought to support Egypt under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi in all areas, adding that such support was clear in the Riyadh Agreement and in the Complementary Riyadh Agreement endorsed by leaders of the GCC countries, who recognise the importance of cohesion and integration with Egypt, considering that the security and stability of Egypt represents the security and stability of the Gulf states, particularly in the shadow of the sensitive circumstances the region and the world are going through and which require close interconnection among nations.

The GCC Secretary-General noted that the GCC countries had confirmed their full support to Egypt and its people in the fight against terrorism and in the protection of its citizens both at home and abroad.

Dr Al Zayani added that the GCC countries also support all military actions taken by Egypt against terrorist groups in Libya following the killing of 21 Egyptian Copts by Islamic State militants in Libya, stressing that it was the inherent right of states to maintain their security, independence and the safety of their citizens.
