President Obama: US fight is not against Islam

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that the United States and the West are not at war with Islam, but with those who insult Islam.

In a speech he gave at an anti-extremism summit held at the White House, President Obama said that confronting violent extremism is not just a matter for the military, but is also a fight "against warped ideas, and against the propaganda being used to recruit and incite young people to violence".

The US President added that the main challenge is the need to confront those 'perverted' ideas propagated by terrorist organisations to incite people, especially the youth, to violence.

Obama added that organisations like Al-Qaeda and Daesh are in desperate need for legitimacy, as they are trying to portray themselves as religious leaders of a holy war to defend Islam.

He stressed, "We should never accept this assumption because it is a lie, and we should never provide these terrorists with the religious legitimacy they are seeking." Obama went on to reject the idea perpetrated by terrorist organisations who claim of an ongoing conflict between the West and Islam, saying that Islamic societies are responsible for refuting such concepts.
