Pavlopoulos elected as new Greek President


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Greek Parliament has elected Prokopis Pavlopoulos as new President of the country with a total of 233 votes, official media reported Wednesday.

Pavlopoulos was the candidate proposed by the senior ruling coalition partner (SYRIZA) as he was endorsed by junior partner (ANEL) and by main opposition New Democracy (ND) party, according to Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AA-MPA).

Potami's candidate, Nikos Alivizatos received a total of 30 votes. He was supported by (PASOK), while Extreme-right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) and the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), voted "present" with total of 32 votes.

Pavlopoulos is to replace President Karolos Papoulias, whose term ends in March.
