Qatar- Photo exhibition depicts First World War horror

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Ninety-four photographs depicting devastating results of war are showcased at 'No War' photography exhibition Katara has launched in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of First World War.

Running for two weeks, the expo by photojournalist Haitham Aziz features documentary photos reminding viewers of catastrophic consequences of war from 1914 to 1918. Some photos show the suffering of troops, others paint a happy expression on the faces of prisoners of war with their escape from death.

Led by Katara General Manager, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, the inauguration of the expo on Tuesday was attended by diplomats, artists and local media.

"The exhibition depicts the plight of people and catastrophic consequences of First World War.

"Held for the first time in Doha, the exhibition will travel to several countries to spread the culture of peace and co-existence around the world," he added.

The photos had been reprinted from a bimonthly pictorial newspaper entitled Truth published in London which covered all aspects of the war. It was printed by Milford Lane and distributed in the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent and included subtitles in Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Hindi.

The newspaper represents a valuable visual resource for understanding complexities and tragedies of the war.

"This album is a documentary record of some of the great battles at various locations involving millions of troops in extremely difficult terrains, trenches and cities on air, seas and deserts.

"Millions of civilians suffered and died. The main objective of showing these photographs is to remind people of the tragedies of the war," said Aziz.

The painful images should help raise awareness about the futility of the idea of war and violent destruction as a means to resolve disputes, he added. "We should fight for ideas of tolerance and fight the root causes of conflicts such as poverty, injustice, and fundamentalist ideas that lead to extremist views and terrorism," he added. The expo at Katara Building No. 19 is open until February 26.
