Spain's trade deficit grows 53 percent


(MENAFN) Spain's trade deficit grew by more than half in 2014 as economic recovery boosted businesses to import and consumers to purchase cars and appliances, the government showed, The Peninsula Qatar reported.

However, exports by Spanish companies reached an annual record, internal consumption caused imports to grow even more strongly, the ministry of trade said.

The shortfall of exports to imports in the eurozone's fourth biggest economy grew by 53.4 percent to USD28 billion, figures from the ministry showed.

That was bigger than the figure for 2013, the year gradual recovery started, but it was still Spain's second-smallest deficit since 1998, the ministry said.
