Bid to smuggle drugs in gut lands three in dock

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Court of First Instance on Tuesday heard three cases involving individuals who allegedly tried to smuggle capsules of banned substances in their guts.

In the first case, a 30-year-old Nigerian is accused of smuggling 929 grams of cocaine after swallowing 56 capsules containing the drug. He was detained on November 16 last year at the Dubai International Airport after an x-ray scan detected the drug.

"It was after midnight when the accused arrived on a visit visa from Brazil to Terminal 3. No drugs were found on him or in his luggage. But capsules were detected in his gut after we subjected him to x-ray test," a customs inspector told the prosecutor.

In the second case, a 32-year-old Afghan was arrested at the Dubai airport on October 24 last year after he allegedly tried to smuggle 75 capsules of heroin weighing more than 896 grams in his gut.

In the third case, a Pakistani visitor, 32, is accused of smuggling 116 capsules of heroin weighing more than 920 grams for peddling purposes.

He was arrested at Terminal 1 of the Dubai airport after 1am on September 29. "He was coming from Pakistan. No drugs were found on him or his luggage. But a large quantity of capsules was detected in his gut," a customs officer said. -
