France confirms Libyan crisis to go before UNSC

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France confirmed here on Tuesday that the Libyan situation will be brought before the UN Security Council for debate on Wednesday, in the presence of a senior Egyptian and pertinent UN officials.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said in answer to KUNA questions that the world body will be examining the Libyan issue in a day's time.

Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi earlier urged the Security Council to take action to stop Libya being completely overrun by terrorism and he said that Egypt was willing to take part in international action alongside France and Italy, for example, to support the "legal" authorities in Libya and the Libyan army.

Nadal said that "Sameh Shoukri, the Egyptian Minister for Foreign Affairs, is in New York on the occasion" of the UNSC meeting.

"The work of the Council will allow support for the stabilisation efforts led by the United Nations Special Envoy, Bernadino Leon," the French spokesman remarked.

France said two months ago that it would not intervene alone in Libya but would work to contain terrorist groups in the south of the country.

French President Francois Hollande did say that France would examine participation in an intervention approved by the UN if there was "a clear mandate and conditions" for action.
