Ankara, Washington agree to train Syrian opposition

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Turkey and the United States have hammered out a deal for providing training and equipment to moderate opposition groups in Syria, a Turkish spokesman said here on Tuesday.

Both sides are set to sign an agreement for a training and equipping program for Syrian opposition in the next few days, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tanju Bilgic said at a news conference.

The agreement will probably be launched in March, Bilgic added.

The program aims to train a total of 15,000 Syrian opposition fighters in a three-year period, which 5,000 of them will be trained at a military base in central Turkish province of Kirsehir.

The latest development came following months of negotiations on response to the current situation in Syria.
