UNSC adopts resolution endorsing Minsk agreements

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN Security Council adopted unanimously resolution 2202 endorsing Minsk agreements, calling on all parties for full implementation including comprehensive ceasefire in Ukraine.

The resolution stressed that the situation in eastern regions of Ukraine can only be tackled through a peaceful settlement to the current crisis.

The UNSC welcomed via the resolution the Declaration by the President of the Russian Federation, the President of Ukraine, the President of the French Republic and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in support of the "Package of measures for the implementation of the Minsk Agreements," adopted on February 12, in Minsk.

It also called on all parties to fully implement the "Package of measures," including a comprehensive ceasefire.

Following the adoption, the Permanent Representative of France Francois Delattre said the urgent situation in Ukraine called for action.

"This conflict has led to more than 5,000 deaths in 10 months," he said.

On the behalf of his country, he called on all the parties to fully and durably shoulder their responsibilities to progress on this demanding path towards peace.

On his part, Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant of the UK said that the ceasefire has now been in place for two and half days.

Although the ceasefire has been respected in the majority of the Donbas, however, he added, intense fighting continues around Debaltseve, where heavy shelling and street-by-street fighting have resulted in scores of casualties.

This flagrant disregard of the ceasefire, he expressed, is deeply concerning and risks undermining the Minsk package in its entirety.

"The fighting for Debaltseve must stop and any detained soldier must be treated humanely," he stressed.

Resolution, or no resolution, the US Ambassador Samantha Power said what matters now is fulfilling the commitments that have been made multiple times.

Minutes before the Ukraine dedicated meeting, the members of the Security Council expressed in a statement grave concern at the continued fighting in and around Debaltseve, Ukraine, which has resulted in numerous civilian casualties.

The Security Council regretted that despite the announcement of a ceasefire on February 15, violence has continued in recent days in some parts of eastern Ukraine.

The members of the Security Council called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and abide by commitments agreed in Minsk, including facilitating access for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to monitor and verify compliance with the Minsk Agreements.

Therefore, the UNSC further called on all parties to treat detained individuals humanely.
