(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) At least 22 officers were killed when a group of Taliban militants stormed a police compound Tuesday in eastern Afghanistan, officials said. The attack occurred in Pul-e-Alam, the capital of Logar province.
Provincial spokesman Din Mohammad Darwish said four insurgents attacked the compound. 'The first attacker blew himself up at the entrance, opening the way for his comrades to storm the compound,' Darwish said. 'Two were killed in a gun battle with police inside the compound.'
The fourth attacker died when he blew himself up inside the dining hall, dpa reported. 'The latest information says that death toll has increased to 22 officers and six others injured,' Darwish said.
Another official said the attackers wore disguises.
'They wore police uniforms, and were not checked at the checkpoint before the entrance,' said Abdul Wali, a member of the provincial council.
Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility.
