Even Key West Florida Prepares For Snowmageddon

Summary: A brutal winter storm may seem to have nothing in common with the southernmost island but Key West Florida is bracing to feel the effects of this punishing Nor’easter.

January 26 2015 Key West FL-Anybody who lives in the Northeast and was sitting on the fence about tropical vacations is probably wishing they had done something about it. With record snowfalls predicted for much of New Jersey New York and New England now would have been the time to be on a plane for Key West. Before the storm is over however many travel experts expect there to be a significant spike in tickets bought and hotel rooms booked.

“Many people push their luck when a winter starts out relatively mild as this one has” said Kathy McCormick owner of McCormick Travel and Cruises. “But once that first big storm hits they suddenly want to be on the first plane available. Many of them don’t want to deal with the hassles of passports so that makes Key West their number one choice.”

Island vacations are always popular the first few months of the year but traveling to other Caribbean nations means extra delays going through customs and being reduced to perhaps only one airline to choose from. As the Southernmost City in the United States nothing more than a state issued photo I.D. is required for travel and their airport is served by four different major airlines. Plus there is the option of flying into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and experiencing the magical drive across the Overseas Highway.

“There’s a reason why the Weather Channel is on most television sets when you walk into many of the Key West restaurants and bars” said Norman Vogel owner along with his wife of the popular Roof Top Café. “In the summertime it is so we can keep an eye on any tropical storms that may be developing. But in the winter it’s so we can keep track of how bad the weather is getting in the north. 72 hours after every major storm up north people start piling off the planes down south.” If Vogel’s prediction holds true and he has over 20 years of experience to go by it seems like this Saturday Key West Florida should be chock full of Northerners who have seen enough snow and the only ice they are interested in is what they find in their drinks.
