Historically moonshining or the illegal distillation of home made whiskey traces its Appalachian heritage back to the "white lightning “crafted by early settlers well before temperance laws actually increased the demand for illegal whiskey.
Although their attempts were illegal many moonshiners believed that they were unfairly pursued and feared the possibility of a jail sentence if they failed to escape through the woods. Historically moonshiners were family operations using time honored recipes and methods passed down from one generation to another or from one relative to the next.
