JAKARTA February 17 2015 – The development plan of a copper cathode smelter in Mimika Papua is expected to take more than 4 years.

Director General of Mineral and Coal for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources R. Sukhyar said in yesterday’s presentation Mimika Regent Eltinus Omaleng said smelter construction will be completed in 52 months after the land clearing.

"It’s their figures in a presentation in Timika yesterday" he said Monday (2/16/2015).

He said the smelter construction would begin with the land clearing which would require a feasibility study (FS) and environmental analysis.

Thus it would not be possible to operate in 2017. "It's Mimika own local government which said impossible."

Sukhyar said it would call PT Freeport Indonesia PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara and PT Gorontalo Minerals and along with employers that produce copper concentrate with mining license (IUP).

He said the measure was done so that it can determine the amount of copper concentrate production up to the next 20 years. "As we know until now concentrate production will reach 4 million tons after 2021."

Meanwhile the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources would provide an additional clause in the discussion of PT Freeport Indonesia working contract amendment.

Additional clause was in form of the company's commitment to supply smelter to be constructed by the Regional Government of Papua.

Sukhyar said while in Timika Sunday (2/15/2015) the proposed smelter in Papua would indeed be included in Freeport contract amendment clause to be discussed until July 2015. Read more
