RAK Civil Defence: No LPG cylinders in parks, please

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders are banned at public parks and may never be used there, according to an official source at the RAK Civil Defence Department.

'Using LPG cylinders of all sizes in areas where a large number of people gather poses a grave risk to their safety and is stringently prohibited as per rules and regulations.'

The RAK Civil Defence Department recently received several complaints from the public about a large group of Asian workers who irresponsibly carried two LPG cylinders into Saqr Park.

'They used these big-size LPG cylinders, which are meant for house use only, for cooking food and making tea and coffee at Saqr Park in violation of the law.'

The workers who were asked to take the cylinders out of the park with immediate effect, were warned against repeating the violation, and of a hefty fine and confiscation of the cylinders as well, he added.

'Though public parks are open areas, there is still a serious danger due to the possible leakage of gas.'

The same source said supervisors at all public parks of the emirate have been instructed to clamp down on such illegal and risky practices which reflect lack of safety awareness.

'All public parks will be closely monitored to make sure visitors fully comply with set rules and regulations which are meant to protect the life of the public, apart from observing cleanliness and preserving the environment.' The small cookers used for making tea or coffee, or heating food during picnics or trips do not pose a risk to users or visitors, he noted. 'They are so small to be dangerous and contain a small amount of gas.'

Abu Karam, a Syrian electrician, said he was very worried to see some visitors at Saqr Park cooking food using a small gas cylinder. 'Using this size is very risky and can lead to an explosion anytime.' Umm Sara, an Egyptian teacher, urged the bodies concerned to be more stringent with visitors who use gas cylinders at public parks. 'A fire could break out at any time.'

Recently, the RAK Department of Economic Development cut down the price of LPG cylinders in the emirate by Dh10 to Dh50, as per the size, owing to the drop in oil prices in world markets.

Ahmed Obaid Al Tunaiji, Director of the Department, said a small-size cylinder now costs Dh55 instead of Dh65 whereas a medium-sized cylinder costs Dh100 as compared to Dh140 earlier. A large cylinder now costs Dh190 in comparison to Dh240.
