Saudi- KSA observes World Cancer Day


(MENAFN- Arab News) To create a public awareness on the hazards of cancer the Ministry of Health launched a Kingdomwide Cancer Week on Sunday.

The program which is being held under the tagline 'Cancer Not Beyond Us' to mark World Cancer Day 2015 was inaugurated by Deputy Health Minister Dr. Mansour Al-Hawasi on behalf of Health Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb at the King Fahd Cultural Center here on Sunday.

On this occasion the Saudi Cancer Society appointed Saudi actor Fayez Al-Maliki as the ambassador to promote cancer related programs in the Kingdom.

The campaign will be carried out on a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer highlighting that solutions do exist across the continuum of cancer and that they are within our reach.

The campaign will explore how we can implement what we already know in the areas of prevention early detection treatment and care and in turn open up to the exciting prospect that we can impact the global cancer burden-for the better.

World Cancer Day is a unique opportunity to raise awareness that there is much that can be done at an individual community and governmental level to harness and mobilize these solutions and catalyze positive change.

The 2015 campaign is being articulated around four key areas of focus such as choosing healthy lives delivering early detection achieving treatment for all and maximising quality of life.

Speaking at the event Al-Hawasi said that he was glad to note that those who work for the cause of cancer is dedicated in their endeavor to fight the killer disease in the Kingdom. Al-Hawasi who inaugurated an exhibition at the same venue thanked the health officials and philanthropists who gave their assistance for those who suffer from this disease.

Dr. Abdullah bin Sulaiman Al-Amro chairman of the Saudi Charitable Society for Combating Cancer pointed out that the cancer patients' trauma does not lie mainly on the disease but on the physical and mental pain which eats away the patients' strength and determination in life.

The exhibition which ran concurrently with the main event was attended by the oncology departments of leading hospitals such as King Fahd Medical City the King Faisal Specialist Hospital the King Khaled University Hospital the King Saud Medical City Prince Sultan Military Medical City and a number of charitable organizations.
