INTERNATIONAL PRESS ACADEMY NAMES 2014 WINNERS

"Birdman" and "Boyhood" were the big winners in the Motion Picture categories at the International Press Academy 19th annual Satellite Awards handed out on Sunday night and "Olive Kitteridge" "Penny Dreadful" "The Knick" and "Transparent" won major TV awards.

Legendary actress Ellen Burstyn was there to pick up the Mary Pickford award to commemorate her outstanding artistic contribution to the entertainment industry. She is one of the few actresses to have earned an Oscar an Emmy and a Tony Award among dozens of other accolades and accomplishments in the film theater and television industries. She earned Academy Award nominations for “The Last Picture Show” “The Exorcist” “Resurrection” “Same Time Next Year” and “Requiem for a Dream.” She won an Oscar for Best Actress in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” directed by Martin Scorsese. Burstyn joins past winners such as Rod Steiger Susan Sarandon Gena Rowlands Mitzi Gaynor Kathy Bates Michael York Terence Stamp and others in receiving this award.

“I simply try to be the best storyteller I can be” Burstyn 82 said after a standing ovation and being present the award by her “Last Picture Show” co-star Timothy Bottoms. “I know when the time comes I’ll be able to let it go but that won’t be anytime soon.”

Martyn Burke who wrote and directed the Peabody-award-winning documentary Under Fire: Journalists in Combat was the latest recipient of the Auteur Award previously given to Guillermo del Toro Baz Luhrmann Robert Altman George Clooney Julian Schnabel Roger Corman Alex Gibney Peter Bogdanovich and Paul Williams. Burke is an auteur who moves effortlessly between the worlds of novels documentaries and motion pictures. Burke has an upcoming book Music for Love or War available in March and he is working on a much-anticipated adaptation of his earlier novel The Commissar’s Report for HBO.

“I can attribute this award to Life Magazine because I always looked through it as a child and wanted to be in those places” Burke said at the ceremony attended by his friend Anthony Michael Hall and others. “Exciting places become movies look at ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ ‘Casablanca’ ‘Dr. Zhivago.’ Sometimes the places we go to are not very pleasant.”

Also 17-year-old Antoine-Olivier Pilon who portrayed a violent youth in the Canadian film Mommy was honored with the special Breakthrough Performance Award portraying a teen with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He offered a video thank-you at the ceremony.

Award-winning journalist and filmmaker Sebastian Junger was honored with the Humanitarian Award. Hetherington was killed two years ago while covering the civil war in Libya. Korengal and The Last Patrol pick up where Restrepo left off with the same men in the same valley showing what war feels like and what it does to the young men who fight in it.

Producer director and writer Shlomi Elkabetz turned a spotlight on the oppressive world of divorces in Israel and was honored as the Independent Producer of the Year. He thanked his sister actress Ronit Elkabetz who also co-wrote and co-directed the award-winning critically-acclaimed trilogy of films To “Take a Wife Shiva (Seven Days)” and “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” which took the Cannes Film Festival by storm.

“We are thrilled with the continued success of the show and how we are not afraid to shine attention on the great work that sometimes gets ignored by other awards shows” says President Mirjana Van Blaricom. For example the international journalists offered a nod to Andy Serkis as Best Supporting Actor for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” Tilda Swinton for Best Supporting Actress in “Snowpiercer” and Marion Cotillard for “Two Days One Night” which were performances left out of the list at other awards shows.
