(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A police lieutenant allegedly tried to rape a 21-year-old woman after picking her up on the pretext of taking her to the mall, a Dubai court heard.
The 26-year-old Emirati is believed to have met the Yemeni woman on an instant messenger service for cell phones shortly before picking her up in his car to drive her to the shopping centre on August 31 last year.
He is accused of kidnapping the woman to a remote location where he allegedly tried to have sex with her against her will. But he could not as she resisted him.
He was charged with attempted rape, sexual assault and kidnap in the Court of First Instance.
The woman said the accused texted her around 7.30pm to pick her up from her place. She claimed she refused and replied saying she would meet him at the mall. About 10 minutes later, he called and told her he was in the parking lot outside her apartment.
After picking her up, he allegedly drove her to a remote location, where he touched her and removed her clothes to rape her.
A Bangladeshi taxi driver said the accused stopped him around 9.30pm and told him to take his woman companion to a mall. "It was near the trade centre. The woman, who looked afraid, was sitting in the front seat crying. She stepped down and rode in the back seat of my car," the driver said in the investigation.
The woman then asked the taxi driver to save her. "She was crying and weeping all the way. She was constantly checking behind our car to see if the man was following us. She said he beat her and was scared he would beat her again."
The defendant denied the charges when summoned to the Bur Dubai police station.
A police officer said they tracked the accused through his car's registration number. It was known that the car belonged to his brother.
The woman identified the accused three times at the police station.
