OIC issues statement on ways to fight terror and extremism 3 Jeddah


(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) The meeting agreed that facing terrorism would not be possible through security and military means alone, noting that attention should be paid to putting the relevant plans to address the other factors of the phenomenon of terrorism, including the political, social and economic paths which provide the appropriate circumstances to the spread of terrorism and extremism.
The meeting called on the world community to move together to hold an international conference to combat terrorism, starting with finding an agreeable definition to the term terrorism, the reasons behind the phenomenon, politicization of sectarian differences, focusing on sectarian identity, the use of terrorism groups as tools to work in favor of others' political agenda, the role of media and the impact of electronic terrorism on the spread of the phenomenon.
The meeting called for activation of the New-York-based UN-sponsored International Center for Combating Terrorism to coordinate international efforts to fight the plague.
The participants lauded the contribution with $110 million of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support the activities of the center to eradicate poverty and unemployment in the world.
The Secretary General of OIC was requested to arrange and hold a number of workshops, symposia, meetings and other activities to help implement the recommendations of this meeting.
