US recalled vehicles hit 64m in 2014

The automakers issued a combined 803 recalls in 2014, which include 63.95 million units, the highest number since 1966, the National Highway Transportation Highway Safety Administration said.

General Motor's recalls marked a massive recalls for defective ignition switches and other faults, in addition to multi-company recalls for defective airbags manufactured by Japanese Takata.

"These figures demonstrate the need for vigorous, effective oversight to remove safety defects from our highways," head of the national administration said in a statement.
