Oman Logistics Centre to start operations in first quarter this year

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) In view of the pressing need to realise the logistics strategy within a short time frame the Oman Logistics Centre (OLC) will begin its work during the first quarter of 2015.

It will initially operate under the Ministry of Transport and Communications stated a press release. The strategy covers the short term until 2020 and the long term until 2040.

The centre was formed after the task force set up to develop a logistics strategy for Oman presented its report.

Logistics is one of the major non-oil sectors of the economy which has the potential to contribute a substantial part to the GDP and create numerous quality jobs.

OLC will have a number of key responsibilities:
* To execute and supervise implementation of the logistics strategy.
* To make logistics a core driver for Oman's economy.
* To encourage the private sector to invest in and develop logistics competence.
*To administer improve and develop the logistics sector in accordance with international best practices.
* Set standards and ensure that these are maintained and continually improved through clear and transparent processes monitoring and feedback.
*To encourage and support the adoption of logistics technology in both government and private sectors.

The logistics strategy is somewhat unique in that it is not dependent on large capital investment projects but instead focuses on the soft processes that by their nature cut across individual government and business entities and which will be critical to the future growth and development of the non-hydrocarbon economy the release added.

According to the findings of the task force Oman's existing port infrastructure at Sohar Salalah and Duqm were sufficient to meet the strategy's ambition. The investment in Oman Rail airports and roads has the potential to open up substantial new opportunities for logistics in Oman and the movement of cargo through Oman to the rest of GCC. This potential will only be fully realised if the logistics strategy is implemented quickly and effectively the release said.
