(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The White House and the US Department of State has expressed gratitude to Oman for its role in securing the temporary relocation of American diplomats departing the US Embassy in Sanaa Yemen.
A release by the US Embassy in Muscat stated 'Under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said the Omani government ensured a swift and safe departure of US government personnel based in Sanaa. We deeply appreciate His Majesty the Sultan's concern for the safety of our personnel and unwavering friendship.'
Meanwhile Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that it acted on humanitarian grounds. It said a RAFO aircraft was dispatched to Yemen on Wednesday. The staff was brought to Oman from where they returned to the US a statement from the ministry said. AFP reported US Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki thanking Oman as well as Qatar for their assistance.
The department in a statement on the evacuation said 'Due to the uncertain security situation in Sanaa the Department of State has decided to suspend embassy operations and our embassy staff have been temporarily relocated out of Sanaa.'
