JAKARTA February 12 2015 – Indonesia ranked among top 10 countries with most cyber attacks on the online banking system during the third quarter of 2014 reaching of 3% from the total 137000 attacks.
The fact was made from the research by Trend Micro security solution provider and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) entitled Vulnerabilities UnderAttack as released on Tuesday (2/10/2015).
Based on the report 3% of the total 137000 attacks on the global online banking were made to Indonesia. The United States placed the top with 13% followed by Vietnam (9%) Brazil (9%) India (8%) Japan (7%) Philippines (5%) Chili (5%) and Turkey (4%).
Numaan Huq Trend Micro Researcher said the hackers usually send PoS RAM malware which would spread rapidly. The hackers also usually launch their attacks which target the EMV (Europay Mastercard and Visa) which may pass the bank fraud control.
“The retailers or merchants are still susceptible to the attacks once they are not implementing special software or hardware to protect the data in the RAM card” he said.
Trend Micro mentions that phising (user identity number stealing) is a general method to steal the users’ money. Such attack sends attractive decoys and spam. In the meantime the techniques of new attacks keep evolving.
According to the Trend Micro there were 721000 URLs (uniform resource locators) which were blocked from the phising escalating from 138000 in the second quarter. The surge was made due to the technique increase and new phising target.
Besides the lack of information on the users also contributed to the surge. The hackers made famous brands such as Apple Paypal e-Bay Google and Twitter as the targets.
Meanwhile Onno W. Purbo telematics analyst considered that the research showed no correlation between the internet technology advancement in one country and the cyber attack potential. In his opinion the attack number has more correlation to the online banking user numbers. Read more…
