Al Jazeera: Release of Journalists 'Small Step in Right Direction'

(MENAFN- QNA) Al Jazeera network has welcomed the release on bail of two of its journalists held and tried in Egypt as a "small step in the right direction" but urged the court to dismiss the case and release them permanently.

"Bail is a small step in the right direction, and allows Baher and Mohamed to spend time with their families after 411 days apart. The focus though is still on the court reaching the correct verdict at the next hearing by dismissing this absurd case and releasing both these fine journalists unconditionally," the network said Thursday in a statement.

The bail of Mohamed Fahmy, a Canadian who gave up his Egyptian citizenship, was set at around $33,000, while Baher Mohamed, an Egyptian, was freed without bail.

Fahmy and Mohamed were initially sentenced to seven and 10 years in prison respectively but have since got their sentences overturned in appeal. A third Al Jazeera journalist, Australian Peter Greste, was released and deported on Feb. 1.

The trial is scheduled to resume on Feb. 23.
