Lower House Speaker receives Danish delegation


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Lower House speaker Atef Tarawneh Wednesday received a Danish delegation, currently visiting the Kingdom, to follow up on Jordan's request to join the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as a partner for democracy.

Tarawneh assured the delegation about Jordan's desire to join the council, pointing out the reform process implemented under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II in various fields despite the turmoil in the region.

He noted that Jordan was able to successfully put in place many legislation including those concerning political parties, Constitutional Court, Independent Election Commission law as well as constitutional amendments and amendments in the Lower House's rules of procedure.

Tarawneh said the Kingdom is a role model when it comes to respecting international laws and conventions. Jordan opened its borders to receive refugees even though the move adversely affected the social, economic, political and security aspects. The country has also received millions of Palestinian over the years. The speaker tackled the issue of terrorism and drew a comparison between actions of terrorist groups and the terror unleashed by Israel, stressing the need to internationally confront this phenomenon wherever it existed.

He added that the executions of a number of convicted criminals carried out recently were in line with laws and constitution of Jordan and the Islamic Sharia'a.
