Absconding maid given a second chance, steals

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An Indonesian maid, 46, has been charged in the Court of First Instance with prostitution and stealing 10 watches from her sponsor and Dh1,000 from another maid at the house she worked in.

The maid's employer, a 43-year-old Emirati teacher, said the maid, who had been working for her for four years, absconded on August 7 last year. "On September 22, she phoned me asking for forgiveness. She wanted to return and work for me."

The teacher took her back and was planning to cancel the absconding report she had filed at the General Directorate for Residency and Foreigner Affairs the next day.

"I left early for work and left her alone at the house. I returned from work around 9.45am and found that she had absconded again."

The teacher found a box containing 10 watches of different brands missing from the house. A sum of Dh1,000 was also stolen from an Ethiopian maid employed in the house.

The Ethiopian maid, 24, said the accused stayed only for one day after she returned to work. "We shared the same room for four years and knew where I kept my money." The defendant reportedly admitted in the investigation that she worked as a prostitute to make a living.
