Thank you UAE for the support, says Egypt PM

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab thanked the UAE government for continuing its support in helping rebuild Egypt.

"I would like to thank you on behalf of the Egyptian people for your support in helping us. Dubai is the city of happiness, welfare, safety and protection. I am here to share the Egyptian experience which is now building its future with determination," said the Egyptian prime minister.

Mahlab's comments came on the closing day of the three-day government summit which brought together key government leaders.

The country is on a reform path after its recent political turmoil. Mahlab has vowed to fight extremism and turn a new page and write a success story for Egyptian masses.

"People have over and over again shown their determination to shape the country's future - this has impacted the leadership, government, its referendum and vision. Our government is committed and well-regulated to serve people with honesty, dignity and transparency."

Talking about the country's economic reform plan, Mahlab explained his plan to increase public expenditure on social welfare programmes.

"In Egypt, we have started an economic reform plan keeping in view sustainable development and security. Our economic reforms are based on three main pillars providing social support to the poor and marginalised, providing economic incentives to boost employment and lastly, legislative reforms to activate a one-stop shop principle which supports start-ups and projects."

Banking on the success of the Suez Canal project to position Egypt as an infrastructure pivot for the region, he said: "The Suez Canal project is expected to be the biggest industrial nerve centre spanning over 3,400km. Governance requires governments to be efficient. In line with the new constitution, we have set up an anti-corruption body to build transparency. This will help increase GDP exponentially."

"We have moved from a non-stable government to a stable government which is now focusing on the long term goals. We have improved the financial rating of Egypt from B- to B for long-term credit. The Egyptian stock market has exceeded expectations compared to 2014, showing one of the best returns worldwide. All this confirms we are on the right path. We invite you all to participate in our growth and development process. There are a lot of investment opportunities represented in Egypt," said Mahlab.

Mahlab wasn't tightlipped on the country's stance against terrorism, calling Egypt a shield for Arab nations.

"We are hopeful of a better future. We are determined to fight terrorism. We want to restore safety and security in our country. Terrorism has become borderless and Egypt wants to be the shield for the Arab World. We hope to be able to eradicate the roots of terrorism in the Arab World," concluded Mahlab.
