EU calls on Houthis to reject violence

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Wednesday reiterated its concern about the security situation in Yemen and also rejected the constitutional declaration by the Houthi rebels as illegitimate.

"Yemen's transition is at great risk. Its persistent security challenges might lead the country to more turmoil and collapse of state authority," warned EU High Representative Federica Mogherini during a debate on Yemen in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this evening, Mogheirni's statement was read on her behalf by Zanda KALNI?A-LUKASEVICA, Latvian Parliamentary State Secretary for EU Affairs , whose country holds the current EU Presidency "We consider that the so-called constitutional declaration unilaterally issued by the HoUthis last Friday has no legitimacy. We call on all political forces in particular the Houthis who take clear responsibility by their actions starting by unequivocally rejecting violence and coercion as political tools," she said.

"Yemen's failure would pose a direct threat to the EU and its allies in the region," she stressed and called on all regional actors to contribute positively to resolve the crisis in Yemen.

"It is our firm belief that the framework provided by the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative, the outcome of the national dialogue conference and the peace and national partnership agreement should remain the reference point for the Yemeni transition" declared Lukasevica.

She underlined that there is no other way out of the crisis but genuine dialogue and inclusive political process.

"We hope that the resumption of broad consultations between Yemeni parties under the UN auspices on Monday will bear fruit. The coming weeks and months will be decisive to show in which direction Yemen is heading," she said.

She added that the EU can play a useful role if it works with the regional partners namely the Gulf countries, Saudi Arabia and the UN.
