Qatar's Nasser elected to ISSF Athletes Committee

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar iconic sports star Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah (pictured) has been elected as a member of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Athletes Committee for a four-year period.

"We welcome you as member of the ISSF Athletes Committee and look forward to a good and fruitful cooperation. In the next (few) days, you will receive the official designation letter together with the diploma," says a letter which was released to the press here yesterday.

The communiqué has been jointly signed by Olegario Vazquez Rana and Franz Schreiber, President and Secretary General of ISSF respectively.

India's World and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra has been elected as Chairman of the ISSF Athletes Committee.

Bindra, who specializes in rifle events, won gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The other members of the committee include Zorana Arunovic of Serbia, Marco De Nicola of Italy, Jongoh Jin of Korea, Henri Junghaenel of Germany and Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova of Slovenia.

The 44-year-old Nasser is Qatar's high-profile athlete thanks to his success not only in the sport of skeet shooting but also as a rally car driver.

He has represented his country at five Olympic Games - with a bronze at the 2012 London Games his best so far.

His driving career is no less accomplished, having won the 2006 Production World Rally Championship and the Dakar Rally twice. He first won the grueling Dakar Rally in 2011 and again repeated the feat this year.

Being a two-sport athlete is a challenging logistical exercise but Nasser is committed to excelling at both disciplines.

"It is my dream to compete in a sixth Olympic Games and win gold," Nasser had said about his plans to take part in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

"I will reduce the number of rally events I will be taking this year. I want to spend more time with my family. I also want to do more shooting camps and concentrate on my goal. The goal is to win gold at the next Olympics in Brazil," he had said.

Qualification for the Rio Games will be the first target and the upcoming March 15 to 24 ISSF World Cup Shotgun in Acapulco, Mexico is one of the several events which will serve as a qualifying event for the quadrennial event in 2016 to be hosted by the Brazilian city.
