Qatar- Aouabed spurs Ashkal to Umm Al Zubar Cup glory


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Stephan Ladjadj guided Al Ghazali-trained Three Cliffs to victory in race seven as Dubai Sunshine - ridden by Y Al Hajri - finished second.

With Almotasem Al Balushi in the saddle, Christmas Aria finished third.

In race six, Bentley powered Al Ghazali - trained Hab Reeh to victory ahead of Maazouz, which had Alberto Sanna in the saddle. Al Khattaf, ridden by R Mullen, finished third in the 1200m race.

Earlier, too, Bentley was the centre of attention when he rode Bader to victory in race two.

Bader clocked a time of 1: 11.63 to win ahead of Red Connect ridden by Marco Monteriso.

Al Gahzali-trained Nu Form Fire sealed the third place with Mullen in the saddle.

In race one, a 1800m marathon, Bentley kicked off the day with a win with Al Ghazali-trained Qaa'ed.

Qaa'ed finished with a time of 2:09:55.

Al Taweel, ridden by Gary Carter, was second while Tadmur, guided by T O'Shea, was third.

Race seven was sealed by Star Deal, who was piloted by Y Al Hajri while in race four, Thameen cornered glory with jockey Almotasem Al Balushi in the saddle.

Today, the action at QREC resumes with riders aiming for Marmi Cup glory.

Earlier on Tuesday, QREC celebrated the annual National Sport Day with a slew of events and activities.

Numerous sports and entertainment activities greeted visitors who spent the day with their families, friends and colleagues at QREC.

Outdoor sports such as football, basketball and horse riding were a big hit while children were entertained with activities like face-painting and pony riding.

The children were thrilled to get a pony ride which was provided by QREC. A horse race was also conducted by the QREC to enable the children to feel the thrill of the contest.

The event was attended by QREC Chairman H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh Al Thani, QREC Board members and senior management.

Sheikh Mohammed and some senior management members also participated in horse riding.

Several QREC employees and members as well as their families were engaged in a thrilling football match.

Specifying a designated day to celebrate sports in the country was a move by the Emir,

H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, reflecting vision in caring about the health and wellbeing of the people in Qatar.

The initiative was admired worldwide, as Qatar was the pioneer in adopting a national day for sports. The United Nations has also declared the 6th of April as an international day for sport.

The sports sector is one of the main components of the social development pillar of the National Development Strategy 2011-2016 and Qatar National Vision 2030. Further, it plays an important role in improving the quality of life for all people.
