Financial crimes don't pay, seizure value crosses Dh1b


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The total value of seizures related to economic crimes in 2014 touched Dh1.12 billion, the Dubai Police have revealed. Over 580 suspects were arrested in connection with 521 cases that included fraud, forgery, money-multiplying scams and product counterfeiting.

Colonel Abdullah Rashid, Director of the General Department of Anti-Economic Crimes, said the department seized 70,000 counterfeit phones and accessories valued at Dh250,000 in the current year so far. Over 20,000 counterfeit bags and garments worth Dh4 million were seized during the same period.

He said the police have a zero-tolerance policy against people who indulge in economic crimes. The department, he said, is committed to protecting the trademarks of brands choosing to invest in Dubai. The police use advanced technology to counter the sophisticated methods used by criminals in forging counterfeit credit cards. The department, he said, recorded 260 cases and arrested 310 suspects in this regard, with the total value of seized products touching Dh98.98 million.

The department, Colonel Rashid said, recorded 151 cases of money-multiplying scams and arrested 174 suspects. The total money seized in such cases touched Dh76.55 million. In the 110 cases of forgeries recorded, the police arrested 97 suspects and made seizures worth over Dh976 million.
