McDonald's sales drop in January on Asian setbacks

(MENAFN) McDonald's announced posting a worse-than-expected decline in its global sales in January, dragged down by a slump at its Asian restaurants, Times of Oman reported.

The US fast-food chain's sales dropped 1.8 percent last month, far below analysts' expectations of a 1.2 percent decline. US sales narrowly rose, while Asia, the ME and Africa's sales dipped 13 percent.

In Asia, McDonald's suffered a series of setbacks, including the rationing of French fries in Japan and a scandal involving a meat supplier. The vendor, Shanghai Husi Food, was accused of repackaging old meat in July.

"I don't think we're going to see a major bounce back this year. It's a tough, competitive market," executive vice-president at Chicago-based research firm Technomic said.
