Schoolgirl kills friend over gold earrings


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A class X student murdered her classmate over a pair of gold earrings at Villupuram, about 156kms from Chennai. Selvi, 14, was the daughter of a lorry driver studying at a government school in Vannur village. On the fateful day, she did not return home and later her body was found floating in well near her school. Police suspected her classmate Sandhya's role in the murder as she was last seen with Selvi.
Though Sandhya initially lied that Selvi had a boyfriend, she broke down during interrogation. She confessed to having borrowed Selvi's earrings but was unwilling to hand it back. Instead she told Selvi she would return them after drinking water at a nearby well. When the girls went to drink water from the well Sandhya pushed Selvi in and went back to school.
In a separate incident, a six-year-old girl was found dead in a well near her house at Idayampalayam in Krishnagiri district. Based on her uncle's complaint, police are investigating the girl's grandfather for incest and rape. The girl's mother is believed to have committed suicide for similar reasons.

Ex-minister's son commits suicide

Former minister K P P Samy's son Iniyavan, 27, committed suicide at his house in Tiruvottiyur in suburban Chennai last week. Samy was the Tamil Nadu fisheries minister during the DMK (Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam) rule. Police suspect Iniyavan took the extreme step due to drug addiction. It was his wife who discovered his body hanging in the bedroom and alerted the rest of the family. The couple were married in 2014 and have a six-month old girl. Iniyavan was declared brought dead at a local hospital. Samy's wife too died recently of illness.

Law college students strike

Students of the Chennai-based Dr Ambedkar Government Law College went on an indefinite strike from February 2 to protest the proposed shifting of their institution from the Madras High Court complex to the suburbs.
They blocked traffic at Poonamallee High road, Beach road and Egmore holding placards and shouting slogans. "The current premises has access to the High Court and is also in the centre of the city. Besides, this college is a heritage structure that has international recognition. If the campus is shifted it would affect the faculty and their jobs," the students claimed.

Security stepped up for by-polls

Vigilance has been stepped up to prevent malpractices in the February 13 by-polls in Srirangam constituency in Tiruchi district about 350kms from Chennai.
The Election Commission's flying squads have arrested several teams with cash, clothes and other gifts meant for bribing voters. Many parties have resorted to distributing saris, jewellery and mobile phones in villages on the sly.
AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) leader Jayaram Jayalalithaa has also sent a 14-page booklet to Srirangam appealing for her candidate Valarmathi and listing her party's achievements and election freebies.

Boy rescued from open sewer

A six-year-old boy fell into an open sewer inside a temporary stall set up at Velacherry Main road in Chennai last week. Luckily the boy was rescued by the fire safety department who arrested the stall owner for illegally opening sewage covers.
The stall owner had opened the cover of the Chennai Metro Water sewer pipe to dump his shop garbage. The police warned other stalls in the area of resorting to such practices.
