Waiter jailed for starting fire in ex-girlfriend's room

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A 26-year-old waiter has been sentenced to one year in prison and deportation for setting his ex-girlfriend's bedsheet and curtain on fire at night while he was drunk, putting others' lives at risk.

Earlier, the Indian, identified as A.R., told the court that he was too drunk when he sneaked into his ex-girlfriend's room at night and set her shoe on fire. He admitted, before the Dubai Court of First Instance, to the arson charge but claimed he was not conscious of what he was doing then.

A.R. was upset over his breakup with his ex-girlfriend, a 34-year-old Filipina, who worked at the same hotel in Jebel Ali.

Prosecution records showed that the waiter sneaked into the hotel's women-only accommodation and started the fire, putting thus the life of another woman, who was sleeping, at risk.

He faced charges of arson, damaging property and sneaking into a women-only place and putting others' lives at risk.

A.R. claimed before the judge that he did not intend to put anybody's life at risk. He also said that he had already paid for the damage he had caused. A police officer said that a fire incident was reported on October 19 last year at a hotel's staff accommodation in Dubai Investment Park. The officer said that A.R. admitted that he was angry because his girlfriend left him sometime earlier.

The verdict may be appealed within 15 days.
