(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) In its first rate revision since 2003 Oman Post has hiked its tariffs. The new rates are applicable for domestic and international mail and its range of services.
An Oman Post official said that the even after the hike the rates are minimal compared to the rates of postal services in many other countries.
"The tariff has been increased after 12 years; our proposal was finally given the go-ahead by the Ministry of Finance and the Telecom Regulatory Authority" said the official from Oman Post's Ruwi office.
"Charges for speed post to all countries have increased from RO6 to RO10 for parcels weighing between 1gm and 500gm. But this is very less in comparison to what is being charged by other countries for the same services and for the same weight.
"Had there been rate revisions every four years and not 12 years like now our charges would have been on par with other countries. But a sudden big hike would have come as a shock to our customers.
"Some countries charge RO50 to RO500 for express mail service (EMS)."
A Ministry of Finance said "Even with the popularity of the Internet postal services have not lost their value. The last hike took place in 2003 and the charges now are very low compared to other countries."
