Saudi- Meteorologists warn about strong winds in most parts of country
(MENAFN- Arab News) Dust waves hovered over Jeddah on Sunday as meteorologists predicted Makkah and Madinah regions to be affected as well by the duststorm. The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) expects waves of sandy winds to continue on the surface and for the dust to limit visibility especially in the northern areas center east and west of the Kingdom.
In addition experts gauged skies will be partly cloudy on the northern areas as well as in the east and south of the Kingdom. Meteorologists stated that the winds would be expected on the surface of the Red Sea as southern and southern westerly at 20-40 km per hour. In the northern-western parts winds are expected at 15-35 km per hour with waves reaching two meters and experts foreseeing the sea as medium to wavy.
Surface winds in the Arab Gulf are expected to be south east at 20-45 km per hour with wave heights reaching up to two meters.
Early on Sunday the sand storm prevented three ships from entering Jeddah's Islamic Port while two others were temporarily stranded. As a result movement was temporarily halted in the port according to the Port's Director General Captain Saher Al Talhawi.
With winds rates registered at 35 knots (65 km per hour) Captain Al Talhawi stressed the importance of coordinating with the meteorology department about developments in weather conditions to prevent any catastrophes. According to the seasoned seaman as soon as visibility levels improve activity will return to normal at the sea and ports since ships have been banned from entering or leaving the area to avoid unnecessary risks.
Authorities are trying to prevent any disaster both on sea and land. Makkah's civil defense spokesman Col. Saeed Sarhan Al-Ghamidi urged citizens and residents in the city to stay away from advertising signs and statues because of the strong winds. The Meteorology department warned that strong gusts of wind will dust over parts of Makkah province including the Holy Capital Jeddah Rabegh Al-Qofotha All-Laith and the road leading to Madinah.
Al-Ghamidi said these conditions will lead to low horizontal visibility especially on the road that leads to southern governorates and the road between Makkah and Madinah.
