(MENAFNEditorial) In the last week there has been numerous news stories regarding acts of workplace violence across the United States. In many cases these types of criminal acts may have been preventable. However according to Security Consultant John M. White CPP. “Not all cases are preventable and even if there is a known threat and as a result security is increased that does not always eliminate all security risks.”
As an example White said “Just a few days ago a shooter walked into a shopping mall in Pittsburgh and opened fire on his intended target and he also shot and wounded two bystanders. The unique part of this story was the fact that mall management had requested a police presence in the mall a day before this shooting and there were four on-duty police officers in the mall when this shooting took place.”
Many times acts of violence such as this are described as “random acts” meaning that someone acts out without warning. However in this case even the chief of police Douglas Cole stated during a news conference that "this was not random."
It has yet to be disclosed why a police presence was requested the day before the shooting or if it was related to this incident according to White. “It is common to increase security if information comes to light that a credible security threat exists. In this case a decision was made to bring in armed police officers and that still did not prevent this incident” said White.
White encourages employers to train their staff on security awareness and how to respond to security threats real or perceived. “Employees have to know how to report security threats or incidents and how to respond to all types of workplace violence including an active shooter” said White.
