We expect Chile's tourism industry to perform well in 2015 with forecast tourist arrivals growth of 7.0%. This is set to feed into continued growth for the hotels and restaurants industry with hotel numbers forecast to grow by 4.4% in 2015.

According to Chile's Servicio Nacional de Turismo (Sernatur) arrivals to Chile totalled 3.2mn in the first 11 months of 2014 a 1.1% increase year-on-year (y-o-y). Growth has been variable throughout the year with arrivals surging by 24.8% in May but falling by 32% in July and 38% in September. However we note that this was the winter season in Chile and estimate arrivals to have picked up over the remainder of 2014 and into 2015 as tourists arrived to enjoy the summer season. Preliminary indications suggest that arrivals rose by 14% in December boding well for early 2015.

In January 2015 the Ministry of Economy announced that it was planning to substantially increase investment in Chile's tourism industry noting that 2014 levels of investment were well below those in nearby countries. The ministry plans to increase spending on promoting tourism to USD8000mn in 2015 External promotion will particularly focus on markets such as Brazil with arrivals from Brazil rising by 52% in December and North America which continues to post steady growth.
