BOGOR February 9 2015— The Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI) in West Java predicts thousands hectare of agricultural land in the province will be eroded due to the plan to establish 25000 units of low cost house which will be built by the housing developer this year.

The development of 25 000 units of house is a form of contribution of West Java in supporting the government program to provide a million houses to reduce the backlog which reaches 13.5 million units.

“The developer of low cost house will use the agricultural land because it’s the only land which is easy to be worked by them” Chairman of HKTI in West Java Entang Sastraatmadja told Indonesia Business Daily Saturday (2/8/2015).

He asks the provincial government of West Java and the developer to revise the plan which will use the agricultural land as location for the house development.

He insists that the developer and the Provincial Government of West Java actually have to support the food self sufficiency program initiated by the current government by extend the agricultural land in some areas in West Java.

“It will be impossible to reach the food self-sufficiency target if the agricultural land is used up for the settlement area. This is something that has to be considered by the entire parties” he said.

According to him the district/city government is also expected to revise the licensing for horizontal housing due to the continuous land conversion.

Entang explained that within the last few years the farmers in West Java were still facing various obstacles in developing the agricultural product due to the land conversion.

He cited the land conversion occurred in District of Bogor last year which reduce almost 2500 hectares of land which caused the lack of land and bad quality of agricultural product. Read more...
