Barka, Sohar to share Oman's largest water project: OPWP

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A new independent water project (IWP) which will be Oman's largest IWP with a total capacity of 530000m3 of water per day will be located over two sites in Sohar and Barka according to the chief executive officer of Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP).

OPWP had earlier considered Suwaiq as a site for this large project. 'Now it has been decided to split the capacity over two locations in Sohar and Barka. This will be the largest IWP in Oman' said Eng Ahmed al Jahdhami in an exclusive interview with Muscat Daily.

'We are looking for around 250000m3 per day capacity in Sohar and around 280000m3 per day capacity in Barka. So the total capacity of this project will be nearly 530000m3' he said.

Jahdhami said that OPWP is awaiting final approval and expects to float the request for qualification (RfQ) for the project in February. 'The contract is expected to be awarded in November this year. Commercial operations at both sites will be targeted for 2018.'

He added that OPWP's current focus is on developing water projects. 'A new IWP is also being considered for Salalah with production capacity in the range of 18mn-20mn imperial gallons per day (MIGD).

'A technical study - among other evaluations - will be carried out by an advisory group and we hope to float the RfQ for this project by October 2015. Our target for commercial operations for the Salalah IWP is the second quarter of 2019' Jahdhami said.

OPWP recently awarded an international tender for the Quriyat IWP to a consortium comprising Hyflux a Singapore-based provider of water and power management solutions and National Power and Water Co to design build own and operate the water project. Quriyat IWP will be a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant with a designed capacity for 200000m3 of water per day.
