Egypt football violence death toll climbs to 19, 20 wounded

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The death toll of the Air Defense Stadium violent clashes between supporters of Zamalek Cairo-based football club and police climbed to 19, while injuries reached 20, Egyptian Ministry of Health and Housing announced on Monday.

The Egyptian Football Association EFA decided to temporarily postpone the local league matches, in mourning of the victims.

The Ministry added in a press statement last night that bodies of the deceased were transferred to the morgue, including three unknown ones, while the wounded were transferred to the hospitals.

A total of 19 wounded were discharged from hospitals, while one case is still under medical supervision, it added.

EFA decided last night to freeze a previously-issued decision pertinent to the return of fans to football matches, in coordination between the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Youth and Sports due to the latest vicious incidents.

The Egyptian cabinet expressed its deepest sorrow and grief over the latest Air Defense Stadium violent events, offering condolences to the victims' families.

Cabinet spokesman said in a press statement that some of the fans attempted to intrude the stadium and attack the security forces, refusing the inspection procedures.

They attacked the security forces and burnt a number of vehicles and private and public properties, which resulted in the death and injury of a number of fans attending the match due to the stampede.

Egypt's public prosecutor instructed a group of Public Prosecution investigators to inspect the scene.

A senior security source at the Ministry of Interior announced to the Middle East News Agency (MENA) last night the arrest of 17 rioters involved in the violence.

A total of 20 policemen were injured as they were attacked by stones and fireworks during the clashes, the source added.
