GCC rejects Houthi "coup" in Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Saturday voiced absolute rejection of the "coup" launched by Houthis in Yemen, while reiterating support for the Yemeni people.

In a statement handed out here, the GCC said: "The Houthi coup is a complete devastation of the peaceful political process in which all Yemen political parties participated, and a disregard for all national, regional and international efforts sincerely aimed to maintain Yemen's security, stability and unity and to fulfill the hopes of the Yemeni people." It also condemned the "constitutional declaration" as a "coup against legitimacy due to its contradiction with relevant international resolutions in Yemen and the Gulf Initiative, which was adopted by the international community, its Executive Mechanism and National Dialogue outcomes involving political solutions agreed through comprehensive consensus among political forces and components of the Yemeni society, which were internationally supported".

"This Houthi coup is a serious unacceptable escalation and blatantly violates the multiplicity and coexistence approach by which the Yemeni society is characterized, and even puts Yemen's security, stability, sovereignty and unity in jeopardy," it lamented.

Furthermore, the GCC considered a threat to Yemen's security and public safety as a threat to the region's security and stability and its people's interest, and to international security and peace.

Therefore, the GCC warned that it would take all necessary measures to protect its own interests.

"The Houthis' coup will only lead to more violence and bloody conflict in this sisterly country," it cautioned, while calling on the international community to live up to its responsibility by condemning this "coup" and rejecting its consequences.

In its statement, the GCC also urged the UN Security Council to move immediately to put its resolutions on Yemen in place and to take necessary resolutions to put an end to this "coup" which, it said, would drive Yemen and its people's future into a "dark tunnel".
